"Breaking the bias is a joint effort, not an individual one.

Why is it important to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD)?

I think it’s important for two reasons. The first being that we are still not where we should be when it comes to equal opportunities and equal pay for all genders. But it’s not only about fair pay, it’s also the environment in which we expect women to work. Let’s take offshore industries as an example. There are not many women working offshore in India not because they are not qualified but because of the conditions and basic hygiene factors not being up to the mark.

The second reason we need to celebrate IWD is the pandemic. The past two years have been brutal to people all around the world. Many people lost their jobs. It will take a long time to set that right. During the pandemic there were a lot of invisible jobs at home, jobs that aren’t truly recognised, such as taking care of children or household activities. Women around the world rallied for their family, they deserve to be celebrated!

What bias have you felt in your career?

I think I’m quite lucky, I haven’t really experienced bias due to several reasons One of which is that bias often is in our own minds.

If we don’t limit ourselves, I believe that nobody can hurt us and stop us in doing what we believe in. Besides that, I’ve had great mentors in my career and also at home. They’ve helped me learn and grow into the woman that I am today.

"We only stop ourselves when we limit ourselves."

In what way are you breaking the bias as a woman?

My partner and I don’t set boundaries or restrictions for the work that we do at home, showing to our kids that men and women are equal. This is very important to me, seeing that our children are the next generation.

When I look at my career, I believe that the most important thing is to speak your mind. I will carry myself with dignity wherever I go. If you respect yourself and have confidence in yourself, others will respect you too.

What would you say to inspire / reassure your younger self when it comes to your career?

My mother was my inspiration as well as my mother-in-law, who is extremely strong and independent. I would say to my younger self: thank you. I did not limit myself, ever. I strongly believe that there’s nothing you can’t achieve if you don’t limit yourself When you’ve created that mental security, that confidence, you won’t be stopped by anyone, no matter what gender.
